The continuing saga of a wholly irreverent new way of reviewing
albums! It's like sitting in a room with a bunch of jaded music
critics and getting a snapshot of how they feel about an album.
Honesty and first impressions are the key to the Bargain Basement. (opinions expressed may not hold true
after repeated listenings to albums) Dig it! If you think you know
who the reviewer's names represent, send an email to basement
at hybridmagazine dot com with your guess and mailing address.
At the end of each month, we'll pick a winner and send them some
great new CDs!
Bigelf
- Hex
Inky: Prog/metal/something kind of artsy and cool
music, with no continuity and senseless form. Awesome production. Pinky: I always thought Ozzy was more of a big three-year-old.
Turbonegro Floyd. Blinky: Ozzy Zeppelin. Elton Floyd. Sue: Sucking the big rock from the late 70's and early
80's.
The
Boneless Children Foundation - Stars For Anyone
Inky: Wildly near-psychedelic indie rock with poor production
but some cool riffs. Definitely San Francisco. Pinky: Formerly Ellen James Society? Cute and endearing.
Good energy. People do like their cars. Blinky: Fuzzy upbeat alt-rock. Sue: White Stripe energy.
Colour
Kane - A Taste Of
Inky: The new Cocteau Twins for the next generation of
dreampoppers. Ask Robin Guthrie. He knows. Pinky: The impact of a marshmallow sledgehammer. Nice
harmonies. Blinky: Time-lapse of growing plants. Share my ease.
Astonish. This. Unseen. A Kiss in a lowlands meadow. You get
the picture. Sue: Sleepy music, beautiful sparseness.
Glorious
Monster - Adventures On Earth
Inky: Cool, artsy pop-rock, really well produced. A little
bit of Genesis at times, epic songs.
Pinky: New Genre!: Mathgaze. The Space Invaders' sounds
make me laugh otherwise lonely.
Blinky: Too gentle to be monstrous. If everything hiding
in my closet was this, I would feed it prom dresses.
Sue: Depeche Mode.
Hot
Springs - Volcano
Inky: The greatest low-punk band going today with female
singer. Like Bjork fronting a rockinger Sugarcubes.
Pinky: Bizarro Lene Lovich warble. Styles from shoegaze
to new wave. Brilliant goddamnit, me want.
Blinky: Really good alterna-rock. Think Superchunk, Sahara
Hot Nights.
Sue: Indie Canadian rock whatever that is.
Hurt
- Vol. II
Inky: Really, really great & dynamic metal very
musical without being overly mathy. Dobro in metal? Awesome! Pinky: Stirring orchestral metal, great builds. Queensryche.
Great for if you're awake. Blinky: Sounds a lot like the soundtrack to a Chernobyl
documentary. Good metal. I believe this got a parental advisory
for a sole F-bomb. I can double that right now - Fuck Jack
Johnson. Fuck. Jack. Johnson. Sue: Tool-like theatrical metal that would play well
on MTV.
London
After Midnight - Violent Acts Of Beauty
Inky: Beat-heavy gothic rock with shit-tons of analog
synths. For fans of Rammstein and Hocico. Pinky: Great booming beats, vocals lacking. Enjoyable
death-disco. Blinky: If fascists show up in Tron, their rallies
will sound like this. Sue: Pretentious 80's industrial-like music without
any anger.
The
Maladies - The Maladies
Inky: West coast garage-punk style rock with an east coast
flavor from the Midwest. Cool guitar. Pinky: Quite impressive lyrics. Mildly 70's bar band
with punk attitude. Blinky: Good stuff. Good rock. Good changes. Bright
future. Sue: Queens Of The Stone Age.
Mother
And The Addicts - Science Fiction Illustrated
Inky: Rhythmic and edgey new wavey Ukpop, bits of electro
and bits of The Fall. Pinky: Disappointing. Very disappointing. Terribly disappointing.
Trainspotting disappointment. Disco disappointing. Blinky: S to the U to the C to the K. Sue: Retro Britpop vomit.
The
Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes
Inky: Soul-heavy 50's-tinged girl pop like The Go-Gos
mixed with Little Eva. Stunning and fun. Pinky: Leather Tuscadero without the leather. Their debut
is also their anthology. Blinky: The first Winehouse-inspired mimic of the year. Sue: Just what you expect from an "ettes" band. Leather: It says they wrote these songs after watching
Grease, maybe.
Tyler
Ramsey - A Long Dream About Swimming Across The Sea
Inky: Beautifully melancholy songs with tremendous guitar
work. Downbeat and amazing, clever lyrics and empty spaces. Pinky: Ramsey stayed awake long enough to record this
I fell asleep song one. Blinky: Generic Neil Young, slow drip country. Sue: Mellow, chill, and way too clever for his own good.
Red House Painters.
Seether
- Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces
Inky: Three-piece alt-rock band with some amazing melodies
and great songwriting. Never overdone heavy, just right. Pinky: Songs about unsatisfactory relationships
which happens when you date strippers. Creed. Blinky: Solid stuff, which is why it's on the radio. Sue: Really great album art.
Soft
- Gone Faded
Inky: Like a gentler My Bloody Valentine. Soft walls of
guitar and laid-back drumming. Simply Awesome. Pinky: As advertised. Though the Brits say advertized.
New Genre!: Bubblegaze. Blinky: Has excited Dave enough to play air-shoegazing
rock, an odd sight for the uninitiated. Sue: The part of the Dandy Warhols that you don't like.
Swivel
Chairs - The Slow Transmission
Inky: Brilliantly produced indie pop with catchy guitar
licks lonelier Replacements excellent songs. Pinky: Various styles of wimp-rock. Blinky: Beautiful production, laid back, good changes. Sue: Super-clean basic indie rock decentness.
Watts
- One Below The All-Time Low
Inky: Straight-ahead rock and roll with some northeast garagey
stuff happening. Nice melody, awesome rhythm. Pinky: They're a riot! Dude has great whiskey voice.
A little straight ahead for me. Blinky: Solid Rock. Sounds a bit like Cracker. Sue: They have listened to way too much classic rock.
