| The Australian import Cut is the
latest teen horror film hoping to cash in on the current popularity
of the genre. The setup is vintage 1950s: Twenty years ago,
two people were killed during the making of a horror flick that
was left unfinished. Now, several film students are attempting
to complete the film. The fact that others who have attempted
the same thing have met gruesome deaths is not going to deter
this intrepid band of filmmakers! In fact, they are going to
shoot in the same many-roomed mansion that was used in the original,
*and* they are going to make sure that they have at least a
couple of people who worked on the original film along for the
ride.
There are some inventively gory scenes, as well as moments
of genuine hilarity, but overall Cut is too derivative
and hokey to stand on its own. I was fortunate enough to see
this with a friend in an almost empty theater, and once we
had resigned ourselves to the fact that this was not going
to be Monsterpiece Theater, we had a pretty good time guessing
who would get killed next and how, and generally enjoying
CUT for the bad horror movie it is. So, keep Cut in
mind for your next Halloween movie marathon.
