Another exceptional collection from international multi-label
group, Sonar Kollektiv! Off Limits 2 was compiled and
mixed by collective member DJ Dixon, and it gives you a taste
of the tunes he drops during his sets at Berlin’s WMF club.
All of the material is upbeat and centered around House music
tempos but is very eclectic with its styles, rhythm structure,
and vocals. All of the tracks feature heavy Jazz and Latin
elements without sounding like a deep house tune that simply
sampled some Brazilian percussion. Combining with Dixon’s
strong selection and mixing skills, track contributors include
I:Cube, Trüby Trio, Lisa Shaw, G-Stones recording’s Stereotype
and Soothsayer, Beanfield, Bayaka Spanish, Phoojun, among
many others.
While I didn’t enjoy all of the vocal selections on the album
(in particular the lyrics,) the instrumental tunes make up
for it. This newer style of house music pulls together many
multi-national sounds, eliminating cliché, and gives the material
room to creatively expand. The producers use other rhythm
elements in addition to the typical “four to the floor” tempo
structure and they don’t lose themselves in the more typical
sounds used throughout house music’s history. Be sure to listen
