I don't know about the rest of you but I'm really feeling
the new-school breakbeat tracks. The tunes of Tayo's mix have
abandoned the played out breaks of the older classics and
have programmed new ones (or so it sounds) combining them
with the moving atmospheres and climactic vibe of today's
trance sound. These artists are kicking some much-needed funk
back into today's club material and by pasting together all
of the best elements of the different genres, the result is
wicked.
This mix shows why Tayo is on the forefront of the neo-break
movement. (His other projects include running the Friction
club night along side Rennie Pilgrem and Adam Freeland, running
the Mob Records label, and recording his own material). The
mix features some top breakbeat artists like the Stanton Warriors,
Plump DJ', and Aquasky. The material mixes flawlessly together
with the exception of the vocal heavy opener by Beber and
Tamra. It contrasts too much with the predominately instrumental
mix but is too good to leave out. Tracks like PMT's "Gyromancer"
and the Bushwacha remix of Sueno Latino really stand out,
sounding fresh and original but others like "Rotten.com"
by Meat Katie rely to heavily on cliché build-ups to
become anything worthwhile. Outside of these minor details,
it's another great release from the Distinctive Breaks label.
These tunes are high on the booty scale and I have a feeling
a lot of the trance crowds might be leaning towards this new
break style very soon. -Justin Hardison
