Japan's Tomoyuki Tanaka, the man behind Fantastic Plastic
Machine has had his hands in all sorts of projects in addition
to his work as a musician. These interesting projects have
clearly been a source of the assorted influences that he has
integrated into his latest album. Tanaka was a former editor
of various fashion magazines, hosted a radio show, and has
been a DJ and artist for some time and for Beautiful, he transformed
these influences into ultra-pop and positive-spirited material
that will appeal to fans still wishing Pizzicato 5 or Dee-lite
would reform.
The material is certainly not limited to the dance-floor
but has a consistent party vibe throughout. He brought on
such guest musicians as 77 year old jazz vocalist Bob Dorough
and popular 70's singer Hirth Martinez to work with him and
even relocated to Philadelphia to get the authentic R&
B string sound.
While the vibe tends to run happier than a Telletubby at
times, Tanaka has obviously found a way to combine the beats
from his DJ experience and combine it with the kitsch and
pop design of his fashion days. Big horns, flutes, strings,
house rhythms and even his own humorous vocal contributions
will send you running to flowery meadows in no time if that's
where you want to go. -Justin Hardison
