Basically if you’re confused over the release format of the Astrobotnia project, don’t worry we were as well but it’s really quite simple when it comes down to it. The Rephlex label is releasing Astrobotnia is three separate parts but we had the chance to check out some of each. Part 1 is a mini-LP/CD featuring nine tunes of that spooky yet child-like Rephlex sound. The first tune starts with the always soothing and memorable sound of a fireworks display backed by some vicious sub-bass and dreamy Aphex synths. But just when you’re feeling reminiscent and relaxed, Astrobotnia starts chanting something about Satan being a good pal which while funny, almost ruins the vibe but you didn’t expect a predictable release from the label did you? Part 2 is a six track EP of “dancefloor” tracks that are glitched up and skittish with more of those beloved Aphex synth sounds. Part is an 11 track LP/CD of heavy breakbeat and cheeky space travel sounds and really makes you wonder what exactly you’re dealing with here. Perhaps besides the length of the project, it really is best that it’s broken into separate parts because Astrobotnia loves cracking back those shells and taking the pieces that look most tasty. For a Rephlex release it may be somewhat predictable but that’s really hard to write with a straight face. Who exactly is behind this anyway? -FEDS
