To try and give you an idea of what Tom Jenkins, Mr.
Squarepusher himself has done on his latest is no easy
task but hopefully most of you will already have some
idea of what to expect. In the press release, Jenkins
attempts to share his thoughts on artists being trapped
in a musical ghettos that can destroy any
artist who wishes to side with one branding, genre,
or movement and locking into one perspective is simply
no way to give a reflection of current culture, or at
least not to him. In other words, like the new album,
create anything that someone could easily describe in
a album review. Do You Know is a two disc set consisting
of seven new tracks of digital cut-ups which are wicked
but are expected from Warp but also contains a spoken
word or abstract hip-hop track crammed through an arsenal
of plug-ins, sounding as its shell was busted
open and turned inside out as well as some standard
spooky drones that are finally sliced and reconfigured
at battering ram speed. This could be considered fine
work to the trained ear but some (like my wife) thinks
its just damn annoying if youre not into
this sort of thing. But I love it. Finally he closes
out disc one with an almost identical cover of Joy Divisions
Love Will Tear Us Apart. Disc two, Alive in Japan is
an hour long live set of new and older material from
July 2001 and the only complaint on this is the bootleg
quality to the set. Basically it would of been better
without the reverb but then you wouldnt get all
of the fun crowd cheers and rock antics! Another strong
album from Squarepusher but now I must shut it off because
my wife is going to kill herself. -JH
