Sometimes to keep your music curiosity perked and your knowledge
expanding, you have to break the norm of your "typical"
music. Therefore, when I heard the very popular pianist Regina
Spektor was in town I thought, what a perfect opportunity to break
my norm. Now, with this not being my "typical" concert -
with no electric guitar, angry lyrics or drum kit - I definitely had
to go into it with an open mind.
I had heard some of Spektor's music before, from her various commercial
appearances but made the effort to familiarize myself a bit more with
the artist from Moscow before the show. I'm glad I did, because it
helped me to appreciate her uniqueness. Never before had I been to
a concert that was so mellow. Not that I expected head-banging or
moshing to the piano... but a little movement at least. Rather, the
audience [which was made up of 90% female] simply stood there and
took in everything Regina had to offer. It was a very simplistic show,
with just her and her piano. In the almost two hour set that she played,
she mixed in songs from practically every one of her five albums,
naturally including hits like "Fidelity" and "Music
Box." One of the most entertaining parts of the evening was the
song "Bobbing For Apples" which basically eluded to the
fact that "someone next door is f**ing to one of my songs."
Regina has a style and charisma that is all her own, which makes
for a show that is just as unique as [she is herself]. Her music is
soft and enchanting, staggered with grunts and belch-like noises.
I suppose to sing a capella for over an hour, one might need to belch
every once in awhile.
This concert was very much an unusual one for me, yet an enjoyable
experience. And by the "We love you Regina!!" shouts that
continued the entire night, I can tell I wasn't the only one who liked
it. My only criticism: this show would have been better in a more
lounge like setting. Smaller space, hard-wood floors, and the audience
sitting around flickering candles. However, the fact that this show
sold out leads me to think the smaller space will never happen. Oh
well. I still recommend this show to any past, present or future fans
of Regina Spektor.
