"Sold out" is a phrase that every band would love to hear.
However, it's hard to sell out venues now-a-days, just like it's hard
to sell CDs. Kids are getting lazy with their music. Now when the
band Thrice came to KC, their show was sold out. Don't get
me wrong, I realize that they were opening for Brand New and
that could've played a big part in ticket sales. But trust me, Thrice
very much had their hand in filling the Uptown Theater to capacity.
With the recent release of their album The Alchemy Index Vols
I & II: Fire & Water, the buzz about this band was building.
The story behind the four total volumes and four elements is too much
to go into here, but for the first stage of their new journey, the
music is amazing. In brief: on Volume I a.k.a. Fire,
the music is quick, energetic, and hits you between the eyes. With
Volume II a.k.a. Water, the music is enchanting, powerful
and draws you in slowly. Their performance was exactly the same way.
They managed to intertwine the two albums perfectly by alternating
songs off of Fire with songs off of Water. You wouldn't
think that the mellow style of Water would transfer well to
the stage but with the added element of the deep colored lights those
songs quickly became my favorites. At the top of that list was "Digital
Sea", an almost simplistic song - barely there drums, an eerie
keyboard and hint of guitar, coupled with the blue lights that seemed
to touch everything made for a mesmerizing experience. "Burn
The Fleet" was a nice middle song. Very powerful, right from
the get go, they used every instrument on stage. This songs speaks
of a triumphant declaration that equals a perfect crowd engaging performance
and the kind of song you want to belt out at the top of your lungs.
Though this one was off of Water it wasn't as mellow as the
others, creating a nice median between the two elements (albums).
Thrice played for nearly an hour and easily could've kept going.
Never before had I seen a crowd quite like this. No moshing, dancing
or screaming. Everyone in that packed venue was so captivated by their
music that all they could do was stand there and take it all in. This
was not to be confused with boredom. No, there was movement, but it
was almost effortless. You simply allowed your body to feel the music.
It was an incredible night and I cannot wait for them to have their
own headlining tour.
