This one's been sitting in my "Need to Listen" pile for
a while. Since it came all the way from the Ukraine, I figure it deserves
at least a mention here. The liner notes for this CD come printed
on unbleached, brown paper with a combination of black and silver
inks adorned with artwork that feels distinctly eastern European or
Russian. (I'm reminded of an old piece of Russian animation that I
saw about 16 years ago called The Cow.) As far as packaging
goes, this is one of my favorites. (Props to Olga Indovina
for the design work.)
Now, as far as music goes, ambient noise is hard to recommend to
those who have certain expectations of music. True Delusions
is most aptly defined as an "experience", rather than an
album. It is music only in the most abstract meaning of the word.
To gain the full benefit of the experience Mr. Kiritchenko
has to offer, one must isolate oneself from other stimulus, and plunge
into a complete immersion of nothing more than the album itself. Meditation
at the locus of a surround sound stereo system is probably your best
bet, but don't expect a relaxing therapy. This is mostly a disquieting
listen.
For the uninitiated, be aware: this is not "music mixed",
it is "sound engineered." The acoustic banging of Kiritchenko
on his guitar is incidental to the other background noise that the
microphone has dutifully soaked up, and which the proper stereo
system will faithfully reconstruct as a (sometimes warped) 3-dimensional
soundscape.
