As two guys with healthy senses of humor, Glenn D
and Glenn B are the masterminds behind The Extra
Glenns. With nary a drum in sight, Glenn D sings and plays
acoustic guitar while Glenn B sings backup and plays all additional
instruments. The duo gets a little help from Daniel "Glenn"
Brodo on double bass, but that’s it, and so what we have
here are simple little ditties, built around acoustic guitar
strumming textured with layers of additional instrumentation.
Did I mention the healthy sense of humor? In the liner notes,
there is a little thank you: "No-kill badger traps provided
by Pierre’s Traps of North Dakota, for all your badger-trapping
needs." And these are not exactly songs to be taken seriously.
I know you never asked for my opinion, but I’d say that
horse is crazy / I know what I think doesn’t matter anymore,
but I’d say his mind is gone, Glenn D sings on the super-catchy
"Twelve Hands High." I wished, I wished, I wished
that God would kill me / Instead of leaving me alone to see
you standing there before me / That sad look on your face,
he sings in "Somebody Else’s Parking Lot In Sebastpool."
But the album is not a complete joke. It is filled with love
songs and such; they are just filled with tongue-in-cheek
remarks and other, more blatant jokes. In the end, it all
works out for the best, since most of us take things too seriously
these days anyway.
The aforementioned "Twelve Hands High" and "Somebody
Else’s Parking Lot In Sebastpool" are definite highlights,
standing out as some of the catchiest tracks offered. "The
River Song" is a pretty little lullaby, and then there
is "Memories," in which the tale is told of a young
man pleading with a young woman to see her naked body.
And so we have an album that is sure to entertain, in one
way or another, with its minimalistic storytelling style that
is certain, at the very least, to make you crack a smile.
