If only all garage rock were this melodic and poppy, I would
be a much happier music critic. The clean musical lines, the thick
and meaty bass lines, the brilliant guitars, and the rich vocals
all backed by wonderful keyboard enhancements makes for a very
enjoyable listening experience. My original supposition was that
this band hails from Sweden. No one else on earth can make bright
garage rock like those Swedes, God bless them. But I was wrong
- lead singer Diego Garcia is from Argentina and put the
band together in NYC back in 2001. This music is far too perfect
to be from the streets of New York.
"You finally take your makeup off/ I like your eyes/ You
finally take your lipstick off/ I like your smile/ You get up
and dance around the room/ My eyes are on you
" a
perfect way to begin a great record, this simple and clever
love song. Xylophonic keyboards offset the always-present bass
guitar and chiming guitars. Garcia's vocals are clear and distinctive,
rich with a seductive innocence when singing about romance and
the glories of youth. These songs are pop gems, luxurious in
their aural qualities as well as their lyrical content. Who
doesn't need more three minute songs about being young and being
in love?
I'm not entirely sure how I missed this record the first time
around, but after numerous listens I can find no faults in this
debut record from Elefant, recently re-released on Hollywood
Records. My hope is that what this means is that there is new
music from Elefant that will soon be released. Because now I'm
hooked. I can't get enough of this great music. I want more. Soon.
