As expected from Swedish people using the pretentious French
name, The Secret Language EP offered slightly arty garage
rock. Stop and go dynamics with knife-edged Bowie-by-way-of-Bauhaus
drones. Starting over on We Make Beginnings, the art-level
is of gallery quality. Slimy backgrounds with a touch of creepy
grit support pouty-lipped Jam-like bass lines. 60's organ
peels underline fuzzed-out or jangly guitar. At times the treble
is overwhelming, especially on the boy-girl vocals, but the rhythm
section kicks in to soul it out. Tunes like "Weekdays"
and "Station To Station" (not Bowie's) have a straight-ahead
energy that drags you along. They like to borrow song titles,
check out the lyrical nod to Joy Division on "Live
Transmission." Meanwhile the backhanded rhythms on the title
track and "The Real Future Blues" pull your attention
like a mysterious roadside attraction. The drumming is impeccable,
and the guitar maneuvers smart. They have that certain something
that keeps many great musicians from making great music. The music
is chock-full of energetic dynamics that makes the end come too
soon. Every tune complete in its own capsule, they harken to an
exciting intelligence like Television and Pere Ubu,
and The Fall. Listen to it when you've got time on your
hands, you can't concentrate on anything else with all that's
going on.
