Perhaps it was my destiny to review this record. Or perhaps it
was something a bit less awe-inspiring, like the folks over at
Hybrid knowing my love for great Britpop/shoegazer music. That's
what this sophomore release from Joy Zipper is
Perfect,
beautiful Britpop.
So, dig this: "Christmas Song" is reminiscent of the
golden era of the Dandy Warhols and their debut Dandys
Rule OK?. It is a song thick with guitars buoyed by resonant
keyboards and dense drumming. "Baby You Should Know"
could have been a lost Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine
track. Gritty guitars and odd keyboard flourishes underscore the
highly effected harmony vocals that create a perfect backdrop
for the steadfast vocals of Tabitha Tindale, creating the
same dense layers of sound that Kevin Shields built his
reputation upon. The more modern Britpop flavor more your style?
Then check out the lofty guitars on "33x" that sit nicely
atop light drums and balance the quirky vocals.
Vincent Cafiso takes back the vocal helm on "Out
Of The Sun"; a track that brings forward the mainstream rock
flavor of distorted guitars and driving rhythms, but offsets it
nicely with call and response vocals. Want some orchestrations
in your pop music? How about the downbeat track "Dosed And
Became Invisible"? Lush string accompaniment creates a wonderful
palette for the less-than-uplifting subject matter of the song,
but also makes it one of the most beautiful tracks on the record.
Sampled style beats and off-center effects create the spacey mood
of "Alzheimers". I could go on and on, but all you really
need to know is that this is going to be one of the finest records
of the year. Get it!
And, do yourself a favor. Listen to this record as loud as possible.
Because, like all the other music I've talked about here, this
was meant to be listened to very loudly. It truly enhances the
sonic beauty of it all. Trust me, I wouldn't steer you wrong.
