Like all good things coming back around, there seems to be a resurgence
in psychedelic rock over the past six months or so. I, for one, am
very happy about it. Some bands are simply regurgitating the sounds
and themes of the late 60's, but other bands, like The Waxwings,
are re-inventing the genre - making it their very own. Instantly recognizable
are the jangly lightly distorted guitars and brittle cymbal sounds,
as the band maintains a certain familiarity and ties to the garage
psych of The Who's early recordings. But the songs are pure
Waxwings.
The opening strains of "Steady As Starlight" immediately
draw the listener into the music, with it's Parson's era Byrds
sounding guitars and vocal harmonies. The Byrds' influence is clear
in the guitar work and song structure as well. "Leave Less Waiting"
is a piece closer to the blues-flavored psychedelic rock of the golden
era, evoking thoughts of paisley guitars and hippy tunics. "All
The Fuss" with its thin guitars and driving beats is pure rock
genius. The guitars of "On For Tomorrow" are a tribute to
the early recordings of Keith Richards, whose Rolling Stones
obviously played a large part in the musical upbringing of this Detroit
band. The track is soulful and has just the right amount of jump to
make your feet unable to be still.
This record from the heartland of America's industrial complex proves
once again that the working men are the force that will shape rock
music. The music of the people. The music of freedom. The music of
the young and creative masses. Hopefully there is more of this to
come.
