It has been a while since I have been excited about a particular
band so I am nearly falling out of my seat as I listen to The Box
Social. This band creates a cool pop sound while maintaining a
good solid rock foundation. On top of that, they manage to make all
tracks sound completely different, like completely different groups.
On the rock spectrum they gracefully add early Smashing Pumpkins
sounds, and on other tracks they take the more popular pop of Franz
Ferdinand and make it sound hip at the same time like Lou Reed.
Production does amazing things to elevate this seemingly garage-rock
band into a unique culturally marketable entity.
From the straight rock-out "Brontosaurus Blues" to the
beautifully discordant "Limb from Limb" the album is worth
every second of every song. Contrary to the radio pop, this does veer
nicely into a harder edge that some bubblegum kids out there can't
handle, but well... that's their loss. The only complaint I have is
that they made this an EP; I am left wanting more. Now I will have
to track down their earlier records while anticipating the next release.
