Drake Bell is a polarizing issue. There are two camps on the
matter: the "OMG, I LOVE DRAKE BELL, HE'S SO HAWT!" camp
of female Nickelodeon watchers under the age of fourteen and their
mothers, and the camp of "Oh my Lord, I hate Drake Bell, he's
only known as a musician because he works on Nickelodeon, his music
is nasty, overly Beatles influenced crap" jaded cynical
over-twenty-year-olds that have seen kitsch bands come and go like
melted ice cream on a summer day. They're there one minute - gone
the next.
I've managed to carve out my own niche on the matter. I'm not madly
in love with him and I don't think he should be absolved of all sins
because he's marginally physically attractive. But I feel kind of
sorry for him because of his car crash last year, and I respect his
attempt at a musical endeavor because he has technical ability and
a vehicle to support it. But I can't really say that I enjoy his sophomore
CD, It's Only Time, released last year.
The album begins with the cringe-worthy "Up Periscope"
that could double as an early morning Disney theme song. Most tracks
on the album could act as theme songs, actually. Probably the least
offensive song on the album is "Fallen For You," which features
the cheesy, wishes-he-was-Weezer lyrics, "Buddy Holly
glasses on a Betty Page negative / You're looking so classic,
handpicked by some Hollywood executive / Just like Norma Jean
/ I can't believe I've fallen for you." Hear that preteens? All
you have to do to get attention is dress up like sexpot movie stars
from the 1950's and the men will be crawling all over you! Still,
the song shows promise as does the rest of the album.
Maybe if Drake Bell falls from teenage grace and starts acting his
age, he'll actually produce a moderately impressive album. Until then,
don't rush out and grab his album. He's got a long way to go until
he's worth it.
