Rat Cat Hogan
We're Bicoastal
Skrocki Records

Most of us are at least familiar with, and possibly have been a part of, that hip group of college kids who don't believe in radio, sunshine, or eating. You know - the scrawny kids with their thrift store tees and carefully messed-up hair, who spend their days sitting at a coffee house reading House Of Leaves or getting into a lively debate with their hipster friends about how Barsuk Records has "sold out." If you are nodding your head right now with familiarity, then you will know what I mean when I say that this DIY duo, Rat Cat Hogan, is tailor-made for said demographic. You can't accuse them of selling out; they started their own label and have been self-releasing albums since 1998. You can't accuse them of trying to get on the radio; they are way too coolly careless to sing in key, much less write a riff that 12-year-old girls or 40-year-old women would want to sing along to. You can't accuse them of being too poppy and upbeat; their songs carry with them the sad-sack ponderings of anyone faithful to the scene. What you can accuse them of is a faithful homage to the legacy left behind by Sebadoh and other bands like them. Understated vocals, conversational lyrics, and deliciously lo-fi songs bring back memories of my first introduction to and love affair with the independent music of the early- to mid-90s. This album has "indie cred" written all over it.
