In the land of blips, bleeps, loops and samples, a man named Dave
Einmo, aka Head Like A Kite, has taken residence in the
lovely part of town that hasn't forgotten the beauty of live instrumentation.
His debut album, Random Portraits of the Home Movie, is a careful
conglomeration of acoustic, electric, electronic and, yes, home movies
- his childhood home movies, to be exact - as well as sound bytes
of vintage advice on grooming and social interaction. Don't get the
wrong idea: this isn't a warm-fuzzy, feel-good family album of the
year. The effect is less Leave It To Beaver than Stepford
Wives. The admonitions in "Intro", "Intermission"
and "Outro" are positively chilling, and the songs themselves,
while rich in texture, nevertheless exude a detached, studied cool.
Not that that's a bad thing. You wouldn't kick off your shoes in the
Smithsonian, but you sure as hell could spend a few days exploring
every nook and cranny of it. And Random Portraits... gives
a listener plenty to explore. With nine guest musicians contributing
to the project and who knows how many different instruments, the album
is a sonic adventure unto itself. Where else can you hear about butt
crack smiles, listen to a pre-teen girl sing about the circus and
appreciate the exotic twanging of a koto? This is one home that will
always be interesting, if not comfortable, to visit.
