It's not often that a band's name fits them so perfectly; without
explanation or a story, simply listening to their sound and their
words, lets you know why they chose the name they did. When I
stuck in the new album by Lost Ocean, I automatically thought
"that's a perfect name."
What would happen if you were lost in the ocean, or even if you
were a lost ocean? You would be in a whole other world, lost with
your own thoughts. That's the impression that I get as to how
the members wrote their music, alone with their thoughts. Or perhaps
that's simply the feeling they were hoping their fans would experience.
Either way, it is some good music. I'm going to skip down to the
third song "Just Glide." The reasoning behind this is
because this particular song reminds me greatly of one of my favorite
bands: Mae. A beautiful piano graces the background of
the entire song, coupled with Jeff's (vocals/guitar) amazing
voice makes this an incredible song. If you're a Ben Folds
fan, then I think you'll enjoy the song "You Are." In
this selection, there's the influence of a style of jazz not only
in the guitar, which becomes the main instrument to carry the
song, but in the piano as well. Next, I'm going to jump to the
very last song "Vast." Now, as far as mixing it up a
little, this could possibly be my favorite. Although the general
theme of the song is slower and more mellow, there's something
about Jeff's voice that makes the tone definitely feel like rock.
There are a few parts where it's just him and a guitar (with maybe
a drum beat thrown in here or there) that are very dynamic. It's
such a deep sound, in a lower octave, that I almost hear a NIN
influence. This aspect appeals to me, almost instantaneously.
Ok, so I did get a little sleepy while listening to this album.
Granted, that could be from my long day at work, as well. However,
this album is on the mellower side of music. The piano is incredible
and the vocals are superb, which makes for an excellent album.
It's easy to get lost in this ocean.
