Love Me Destroyer
The Things Around Us Burn
Suburban Home Records

Sometimes hardcore bands follow such a rigid stricture when composing music that they end up sounding indescript and generic. Denver, Colorado's Love Me Destroyer falls into this niche playing hardcore standards. They have the brawny screamo bites and the heavy rock textures of Smoke Or Fire, These Arms Are Snakes, Bullets For My Valentine, and Rose Are Red, but little to set them apart from the run of the mill hardcore menagerie. Their finest and most distinguishable composition is their final number "You'll Never Take Me Alive" which has a melodic edge and hard rock magnetism with faint remnants of KISS, but more modern sounding.

Love Me Destroyer's sophomore album The Things Around Us Burn, produced by Brandon Proff, pays homage to hardcore's gnarly guitar shreds, fomenting bass riffs, heavy striking drumbeats, and seething vocals. Their hardcore is pure and standard, but also falls into the trap of following in the footsteps of their pioneers. "Choked And Charmed" sets up the recurring pattern of Motorhead-ish taut guitar snickers, piercing vocals, and deep quaking drum ridges. It's perfectly executed, going into territories that have been tilled by the likes of Sabotage two decades prior. Tracks like "Not If You Were The Last Sinner On Earth" and the title track have feral guitar blusters and raw vocal growls. The tension in the movements is bolted thick and the speed of the rotations is over the top rigorous. Tracks like "Kiss And Tell" and "Bleed It Now" inject demonic-rising chord progressions and brute-fused rhythm extensions. Movements are challenging, rough, burly, and kick with a massive force.

"Color Of The Grave" offers potent leaps and stature in the chord changes. The vocals have tremendous depth in the howls and hold the reins through the chord transitions. The final track "You'll Never Take Me Alive" is a modernized version of power pop/rock. The melodic rock embroils have a likeness to KISS and Warrant, and though it has huge commercial appeal, I don't think it dilutes the genuineness from which the music comes, afterall musicians are bound to play in harmony with each other after spending so much time in practice together. The lyrics for "You'll Never Take Me Alive" hit the main vein of Love Me Destroyer's content which is confrontational in making right what's been wrong by using phrases like: "Right here looking in my eyes/ You'll never take me alive/ Silver tongue and snow white/ A tired hush runs through the air/ A perfect figure shadowed by my cold dark stare."

Band members James "Scooter" Wellensiek (lead vocals, guitar), Ryan Welter (guitar/backing vocals), Taylor Harris (bass), and Cody Hull (drums) keep a hardcore standard throughout the first ten tracks and dabble in power pop/rock scores on the final track. The Things Around Us Burn is Love Me Destroyer's follow up to their 2003 debut release Black Heart Affair. Though the band is made up of former members of Pinhead Circus and Jedi Five, as Love Me Destroyer they seem to really want to make a go of it and have scheduled an extensive tour for 2007.
