There are very few young bands that come along that immediately
create a feeling of musical nostalgia while simultaneously being
highly creative and original. Lost City Angels has succeeded
in being just such a band. The music reminds me of old-school
Social Distortion, back before they became a rockabilly
band - when Mike Ness was still fond of (screaming) intelligent
lyrics to high-energy punk-post-punk rock music. And there are
brilliant moments of All and Descendants style punk,
but without the distinctive west coast flavor, as this band is
most assuredly east coast. Songs like "Buried On The Floor"
and "I'm Trying" are filled with the kind of guitar
riffs that make rock songs transcend the ordinary and become timeless
classics. LCA have a unique penchant for creating highly rhythmic
and musical rock music that comes complete with punchy bass lines,
crunchy guitars, and tight drumbeats. Vocals range from the screaming
mish-mash of "Tonight's The Night" to the more melodic
actual singing of tracks like "Cuts And Blood". Guitars
are almost always heavy, and filled with the just the right amounts
of distortion and drive to perfectly offset the pounding rhythm
section. Even on songs like "Clutching At Shadows",
when the band puts on its best Metallica face and launches
into artsy near-metal riffing, you won't find screaming guitar
leads. And unlike most modern "punk" bands (you know
who you are) you won't find wimpy AAA radio friendly hits on Broken
World, not even diced in amongst the killer tracks. What you
will find is quality, endearing rock for those that are young,
or young at heart, and have the ears to handle it. This album
is not meant to be played quietly. So don't try to.
