Morrissey has always been an iconic enigma, which is why
it is so strange to see him become a pop star. With the release
of You Are The Quarry, Morrissey achieved global acceptance
- in part because of a nicely plotted media campaign. The 43 year
old crooner gave a rare interview to Esquire Magazine, appeared
on Late Night with Craig Kilborn numerous times and set out on
a sold out world tour. Recorded on December 18th in London, Live
At Earl's Court is the first sanctioned live record since
1993's Beethoven Was Deaf. The concert set includes classic
Smiths tunes, "How Soon Is Now?", "Big Mouth
Strikes Again"," Shoplifters of the World Unite"
and "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved me". Morrissey
dips deep into his own catalogue with the renowned "November
Spawned a Monster" and "The More You Ignore Me, The
Closer I Get". He respectively tips his hat to punk pioneer
Patti Smith with his rendition of "Redondo Beach",
but that is the extent of the surprises. Naturally, songs from
the album responsible for the tour are speckled through out the
18 track disc. Morrissey has aged like a fine wine, but silver
temples and all, he still proves to be a dynamic performer and
his timeless voice is as incredible as ever.
