Edie Sedgwick is an impersonator. Not because he wears
a dress, he's not trying to fool anyone with his drag-mom persona.
El Guapo's Justin Moyer has no false hopes that
he'll be mistaken for a Warhol circle drug casualty. Sedgewick,
I suspect, is a cross-dresser purely for effect, in the Donahue
Show tradition. Where any respectable drag queen's typical stereo
is loaded with show tunes and Un-Chug club mixes, his closet is
full up with Nitzer Ebb, Alien Sex Fiend and Cabaret
Voltaire.
Her Love Is Real... names its stories after actors of
various prominence. Some are faithful odes, where others are
assigned a song with little connection beyond the mad logic
of the star-cross-dressed performer. It's hard to reconcile
Molly Ringwald with the genocidal fashion show, "A
shawl of nerve/a skirt of flesh/a cyanide sash/ten shining razor
rings" unless I missed the ethnic cleansing portion of
her career. But Tim Robbins and his December bride are
placed in the same sinking boat as fellow celebrity activist
Charleton Heston and both extremes go down with the ship.
Sedgewick picks bones with Helen Slater's brother, Emilio
Estivez' pseudonymous father and Robert Downey Sr.'s
kid. Often the links are as apparent as The Beatles'
messages to Charles Manson - that is, seen only to him.
Spacy electronics and light industrial products are put to
good effect with the curious lyrics. Any humor is as acidic
as Moyer's squawking vocals. It's intentionally unnerving like
a pissed off Atom & His Package. The sounds and beats
are explored well to their limits. More interesting elements
than most electronic compositions, which merely precludes that
you can listen to the whole album in one sitting without contemplating
clubicide. Whether you'll hit repeat is another matter. The
website contains fascinating stuff, but no explanation on the
lack of a Bill Mumy song.
