Speaking of which, seen The Notebook? Check that out,
and before the shit hits the stars on the lawsuit, check out the
brushed-snare stylings of her namesake. The accompanying press
makes reference to American Music Club, which holds some
water. But be fair, these guys are somewhat more interesting than
that siesta fiesta. It's groggy sure enough, but the crisp guitars
play pleasantly and the sparse arrangements moan and breath like
Nina Simone.
Crooner Bob Massey (way to go on Cher's outfits)
pours straight-faced tales with tongue-in-cheek lyrics like "Pop
the cork/drink a toast to Ernest Gallo/patron saint of supermarket
sentiment/open 24 hours/it's just down the street." Though
the lesser Gallo brother gets no love, plenty of movie stars past
and present warrant Massey's admiration. He serenades that most
deserving of starlets, Janeane Garofalo, and he secretly
worships Hollywood directors while decrying their sugarcoated
falsehoods. "Traci's Big Screen Test" goes past the
usual lurid opinions, and examines Traci Lords' as a tragic
story of exploitation.
If humor can be frought in anything, which I question, then it
is certainly in these cynical street poems. And if ever Tom
Waits were a silken-throated young man (also far-fetched,)
then he was Bob Massey. (Didn't he choreograph West Side Story?)
This music is the soothing 2 A.M. rambling brought on while trying
to keep your bloodshot eyes open, but willing to succumb to drunken
sleep.
