It is refreshing when a band can use quirky lyrics and crazy instrumental
breakups and pull it off seamlessly. I was sort of puzzled when I
first turned on Hind Hind Legs because I couldn't make a place
for it. By the time I listened to "I Really Like You", I
realized there isn't going to be a simple cookie cutter genre to place
The Lovely Feathers into. Not unless there are only two categories,
good and bad. They are of course going into the good category. The
Lovely Feathers have an unforced pure sound that is very much reminiscent
of the 70's. Back then it was ok to have recorded your entire album
in your makeshift studio. When no one cared about taking out any guitar
feedback or vocal distortion. You can tell a lot about a band by the
amount of production they do on their album; anything too over produced
can leave the music more in the boy-band category then anywhere else.
If your music is the other end of the spectrum, however, you basically
put as much production into your album as needed to make it comprehensible
and stop. The latter, I feel, ends up putting a lot more blood, sweat,
and tears into the actual music. I want to hear straining vocals,
emotional lyrics, and music that makes my insides flutter. Songs like
"Wrong Choice" and "Mildly Decorated" do just
that by switching back and forth between fast riffs and screams to
slow drumbeats and whispers. Over time I realized that I like my music
with rough edges, because at the end of the day nothing's perfect
- so why start there?
