Dilated Peoples
Expansion Team
Capitol Records

If 2000’s The Platform was Evidence in close-up mode, then this new album has his colleague Iriscience primed, as he delivers nearly two-thirds of the rhyme patterns spoken. The proficiency of DJ Babu is inevitable with grumpy, windswept beats that snapped, crackled, and shoved my speakers across the bedroom. Phil Tha Agony will have you reaching for the (<) button on your stereo too, as you wait impatiently (like me) for him to finally drop his solo full-length.

I was having trouble putting my finger on what was so different about this sequel. The reverberations are still far beyond your average (nowadays) breaks from old, forgotten funk vinyl, and Babu even gives some to his Beat Junkies crew on one track. It’s twice as nice to hear more from DJ J-Rocc specifically, who is to blame for a recent must have album (Walkman Rotation). Like each new episode of Star Wars Dilated keeps the plotline moving ever onward. Expansion Team is their Empire Strikes Back. Just as good as before, but in dissimilar ways. They (obviously) know more than one movement, which keeps them well away from that dreaded slump.

-Jason Thornberry
