If 2000’s The Platform was Evidence in close-up
mode, then this new album has his colleague Iriscience
primed, as he delivers nearly two-thirds of the rhyme patterns
spoken. The proficiency of DJ Babu is inevitable with
grumpy, windswept beats that snapped, crackled, and shoved
my speakers across the bedroom. Phil Tha Agony will
have you reaching for the (<) button on your stereo too,
as you wait impatiently (like me) for him to finally drop
his solo full-length.
I was having trouble putting my finger on what was so different
about this sequel. The reverberations are still far beyond
your average (nowadays) breaks from old, forgotten funk vinyl,
and Babu even gives some to his Beat Junkies crew on
one track. It’s twice as nice to hear more from DJ J-Rocc
specifically, who is to blame for a recent must have
album (Walkman Rotation). Like each new episode of
Star Wars Dilated keeps the plotline moving ever onward.
Expansion Team is their Empire Strikes Back.
Just as good as before, but in dissimilar ways. They (obviously)
know more than one movement, which keeps them well away from
that dreaded slump.
