The sophomore release by Pete Mroz is everything you might
expect from a second attempt, and I don't know if I mean that
in a good way. Mroz has a fantastic crystal clear voice with perfect
intonation that could be considered a cross between Gary Jules
and Paul Simon, and a style that could only be generally
categorized as Adult Contemporary. The music is fairly similar
to many in the genre and doesn't really bring any unique aspects
to the table. Although the tracks are pleasant to the ear, there
is really no song that is memorable. I would almost expect several
tracks to be played in the department stores you would find in
the mall.
This being said, I didn't find the entire album to be without
virtue. "Hey Lorraine" has some great hooks and decent
acoustic guitar with a driving rhythm. I actually found the final
track on the album, "You Can't Reach Me Now," to be
one of his best. The slow, soulful guitar picking of Mroz shows
he can bring out emotions through this quiet, yet thoughtful,
tune. This track really showcases his velvety, yet clear voice
as his melancholy tale is told through the somewhat mysterious
lyrics.
Detachment isn't what I'd call a terrible album, but it's
really nothing I'd write home about, and that's all I have to
say about that.
