The New Heathers is a side project for members of the
St. Louis band Ludo, and its name is taken from the Jack
Kerouac book The Dharma Bums, and/or related to Winona
Ryder's belief that there will one day be a sequel to the
'80s film Heathers. These six songs cover a lot of musical
territory in a short period of time. Think of it as pop-rock for
the literate music fan.
A couple of inclusions, "Mr. Green Blades" and "Hammer
& Chisel", feature Moog synthesizer lines that bring
to mind Styx, for better or worse. One titled "Start"
stands out from the rest because of its punky groove. The rest
of these recordings, however, are far more thoughtful and slower.
The best cut of all is "The Fuel, The Fire, The Spark",
as it describes the powerful, all engulfing nature of love itself.
"Santa Rosa" is also excellent due to its accurate and
pretty vocal harmonies.
Who knows when The New Heathers will create new sounds again
or if Ludo ever takes this long of a break once more? But Winona
- and any other smart music fan, for that matter - would do well
to spend time with this band, instead of possibly waiting in vain
for Heathers Two to come out.
