Somewhere between emo and math rock exists a comfortable musical
field where only the most talented of musicians are allowed to play.
The Stella Link slides harmoniously into that tranquil place,
creating a rare breed of delicate and melodic near instrumental rock.
Mixing among the complex arpeggios of math rock are melodic lines
that recall emo and sonic washes that lend an almost shoegaze sound
to a bulk of the record. The music is full of serenity, even when
the lush walls of guitar rise up and create their thick fields of
distorted beauty. Vocals play in and out of the music, but like in
most traditional shoegaze they seem more a part of the music as an
instrument rather than as a separate, distinguishable entity. The
drumming on Mystic Jaguar
Attack!!!! is a loosely hard
rock style mixed with the aforementioned math rock, but tends to be
sparser and more logically rhythmic than most drums in the genres.
The songs on this record tend towards the epic, whether three minutes
long or seven, and all of them are very satisfactory in their melodic
finality.
The Stella Link has put together a record of intense musical beauty
and emotion that might appeal to not only math rock listeners, but
also to emo/harder rock listeners and may even cross over into the
goth genre occasionally. The vocals exist, but never intrude on
the subtle nuances of the well-arranged and brilliantly played music,
lending a very universal quality to their sound. Sonic, clever,
and beautiful, this is my kind of rock!
