Lille is the moniker by which Atlanta, Georgia based singer-songwriter
Grace Bellury goes. She is articulate on the ukulele and composes
melodies that are catchy and easy to hum along to. Her 5-track EP
Tall Shoulders from Whale Heart Records has a Hawaiian flavoring
due to the melodic tones of the ukulele and a sunny folk vibe reminiscent
of Corinne Bailey Rae. The melodic pitch of her voice has a
smooth glossy finish and the silky wavelets of the ukulele's chord
structures compliment the storytelling verses in her lyrics.
The folksy pop tint of the title track bodes well with the airy texture
of her timbres, and the toe tapping beats and lounging caresses of
"Blue Coat Boy" display soft pop sensibilities and acoustic-driven
undulations. The marching band tempo of "Robert Cohn" has
a Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-vibe, and the wobbly
swells of synths splashing against the sensually stroked ukulele strings
in "Melancholera" create a series of slow rising slopes
and reclines. The ambient strands of "Straw" have a refined
swagger that produces a gentle glide which pulls Lille out of her
comfort zone of folk-pop and aligns her with more ethereal pop breeds.
Lille's gentle nature is well spoken in her tunes with a lyrical
versing that has an airy folk feel. Her music lies somewhere between
Colbie Caillat's congenial coffeehouse-style musings and Mindy
Smith's folk-pop arias. The silky feel of Lille's voice and the
soft ambience of her tunes cover a breadth of music that stretches
from the easy listening sounds of ethereal pop to the country textures
of heartland folk. What she creates, she does well and makes it appealing
for all musical tastes.
