Who says that girls can't REALLY rock.
Don't let Candy Ass hear you say that or they'd be likely
to punch you right in the mouth. Candy Ass does rock, and
they rock HARD. Who the Hell does Candy Ass think they are?
Well, they fled New York City for the punk rock scene of Los
Angeles wher e they proceeded to turn heads with their provocative
shows...both sexual ly and in the "we'll fuck you up" stance.
The three girls and one guy (w ho plays drums) have a way
of working a crowd into a frenzy, and this EP shows us why.
Clocking in at just over 15 minutes, Candy
Ass blows the doors off of ya with tracks like the opening
"Bullets Bounce Off." It opens with a barra ge of guitar noise
before settling into a "gentler" mode. Think the Go-G o's
with a bit more balls. Their sweet yet slutty persona hides
the sini ster lyrics. There's no reason why gems like the
ultimately catchy "Go A way" or "Brenda's Boyfriend" couldn't
achieve the hit status of other pop -punksters out there today.
Both contain simple and engaging hooks and p lenty of singable
melodies to drive you nuts for days. Just thinking abo ut
these tunes sets my mind on infinite repeat. They get catty
again on "Queen Of The Crazies." This tune is mined with explosive
sections abut ting chunky progressions. At times it borders
on kitchy, but their bitch y stance keeps it on the "safe"
side of the line. The put the pedal to t he metal and rip
through the traditionally structured "Better Than You." Although
they're tearing the roof off with their guitars, their alluring
choruses draw you in with sweet tones-then they slap you in
the head wit h those heavy guitars again. I can't take all
of the teasing! To close it out they take a swipe at the "Popular
Girls." They make some witty an d cynical comments over another
catchy yet rocking progression. More, mo re, more!
The myth that girls can't rock is just
that...a myth. They tear away at it like the best "boy-punk"
bands. Their songwriting is indelibly catchy and hooky, perfect
for summer driving. It's got attitude as well, and t hat's
important. Candy Ass sprinkle their hard rockin' pop infected
yet gritty punk rock with a bit of that juicy sex angle. I
mean, sex is one third of the equation, and add their stout
rock and roll, and I don't thi nk you'd need the drugs to
make this record a bombastically fun listen--i t already is.
