Milemarker
Anaesthetic
Jade Tree

"Milemarker is on Jade Tree!" I exclaimed with perverse glee when I received this CD in the mail. A match made in heaven for this artmusic fanatic. See, Jade Tree has just absolutely amazing taste in what is new and Milemarker, well I have seen them play and let me just say this, "YEAH!"

On to it: This is evil Devo, danceable diatonic deicidal tunes. Synths and guitars turned up to not 11, but 13, with male/females vocals that actually sing. Gone is some of the old Milemarker screaming but the hard core/hardcore remains. There is flanging and blurbing and seismic destruction of harmony as can be expected from this diabolical troupe. Oh, and lyrics which luridly depict the technological disaffection of industrial loveless society. Example: Even depression’s not depressing anymore. Even disconnection can’t connect us anymore.

Track one is rockin’ and emotes that pissed off but jaded ambience of the urban landscape. "Shrink to Fit" almost tops the best song off their last album, "Insect Incest (Sex Jam 1)." Milemarker, like the mythical Icarus, strive to touch the sun, for something more than mere humanity, heroically ablaze with taboo. The difference is there is no crash and burn, but burn and conquer. With Anaesthetic, Milemarker invents a new formula with equal parts syncopated hardcore and melody-rich New Wave. Did I mention that among this robust groove the Wavey melodies are hyper danceable? The spirit is there. An Underground reupholstered with steel and plastics in lieu of Velvet.

If at all possible you have to see this band in the flesh. There is no telling what they will do. They have a rep for doing incomprehensible artistic things on stage. I saw ‘em at the Pickle Patch in the Naught-Naught and the strobe lights and huge sound in the tiny room blew all logic out of my brain. Only one word describes their live show and that is COOL. They are like dark poet movie stars or something, without being pretentious. The album is solid and contains that intense energy. Four of five iconoclasts for Milemarker and Anesthetic.
