Subtly persuasive, Channing Cope is a study in ambiance and
form, as the music envelopes you, comforting you and drawing you into
the resonance of its instruments. Slow and low, the rhythms lead you
through simple pieces that don't need to rely on intricate facades
to have meaning; they just pull you forward in anticipation of the
light crescendos and beautiful changes that are under-emphasized purposefully
for exquisite breathes of life in a sparse backdrop.
Part Alkali Flats, part The Pupils, Channing Cope takes
a slightly upbeat drum line that maintains the constancy through the
songs, and adds minor guitar and bass parts to a breathy vocal. While
at first glance there is nothing particularly special about their
approach, they succeed in making a masterpiece of an album by creating
that correct feel of being, of expression, that just melts the listeners
psyche and meshes it into the whole. Space is also used on the record
like another instrument, creating that necessary void that expands
its surroundings and emphasizes everything before and after it.
This is a supremely divine album that should be savored rather
than devoured. Every song is worthy in its own right, but compiled
brings an impending sense of nirvana for the listener who just puts
this in and lets go. Nothing contrite or boring, this band just
nails the ambiance in one sheer stroke that follows through all
six tracks.
