It seems a long time since the world was first thrown the curve ball
that is "Rockefeller Skank" and couldn't stop shaking their
booty to the wild, tight grooves thrown down by Fatboy Slim.
This retrospective hits all the great tunes from the past decade or
so, and throws in a couple of remixes and new tracks to flesh out
a really nice collection of Slim's songs. "Praise You" is
here in it's bass drum pumping glory, sounding as Madchester as it
did back in the mid-90's and skillfully reminding where dance music
came from, and where it might well be headed. Crispy remixes of Cornershop's
brilliant "Brimful Of Asha" and Groove Armada's "I
See You Baby" round out the production side of the collection,
showing that Norman Cook is as good re-working other's tunes
as he is at creating his own excellent music. Available for the first
time on this package are the new tracks "Champion Sound"
which is a boingy electronic dancehall number filled with orchestral
hits and tight rapping by Lateef, and the killer single "That
Old Pair Of Jeans"; a gospel-infused groove that could have leapt
right off of a Primal Scream record, but with a melody line
that drives as hard and catchily as any Cook has ever produced. It's
nice to hear that even on his new music, Fatboy Slim continues to
pay homage to his roots and the sounds that helped catapult him to
international stardom while changing with the times and evolving his
music in a way that keeps it as relevant today as it was when "Rockefeller
Skank" first hit the airwaves almost a decade ago.
Rock on, Slim. Rock on.
