That's right, the band that brought us the funky techno remix type
version of the Herbie Hancock classic "Cantaloupe Island"
is back with a new record. Say What!? is wall to wall four-on-the-floor
easy-house music with a severely jazzy twist… perfect party music
for your long summer nights. The jazzy break-beat of "Say You
Belong To Me" is a prime example of exactly what this group still
has to offer the musical world. Accompanying some of the finest drum
programming in recent times are some of the most viciously smooth
raps and R'n'B vocals, horn arrangements, and tasteful guitar flourishes.
The breakdown in "ABC (Listen Up)" has a soulful 60's flavor
that would fit in nicely on a G. Love song, but the modern
scratching and rapping throws the song into a whole new category.
There are slow jams like "Afrodisiac" that play the part
of urban love music in direct contrast to absolutely stunning techno-rockers
like "Intoxicated". The music hits on some avant jazz passages
during tracks like "VIP (Can You Hear Me Now?)" and lays
down some smooth island beats at times like "I'll Be Right Back".
All things considered, Us3 has somehow survived a fickle music
climate and continues to make very groovy music that bucks modern
trends… this jazzy groove collective is as good as any on the
planet, and purveys a tasteful jazz that is better than most anything
happening these days. Get all groovy and check it out.
