Charity Von
Charity Von
Slanted Records

It's more than a little unsettling. That moment when you are digging this debut record by Charity Von, totally grooving on her soulful, rich vocals… and then you realize, this extraordinary voice is coming out of the throat of a teenager? A nineteen year-old? That would be the moment your jaw hits the floor. Charity's voice is full of incredible depth, her semi-gravelly alto resplendent with character and emotion.

And hey, these songs aren't bad, either. Coming from the contemporary Christian side of the spectrum, sometimes I'm left desiring quite a bit more from the lyrics in otherwise great music. But Charity doesn't disappoint. These songs are just as easy to enjoy outside the framework of her faith. No song is preachy, and never does it feel like her beliefs are being forced down your own throat. Instead, her songs are highly introspective and tell stories of her own learning steps in life, as well as in her faith. There are bigger stories here, more along lines that each of us can empathize with… stories of humanity and love and loss.

The music borders Adult Contemporary, but sidesteps the classification fairly easily at all the right times. Screaming guitar solos ("The Narrow") and delicately fingerpicked guitars ("I'll Be") constantly keep the listener's ear coming back to the music. This is not background music, but instead consistently pulls the attention back in, focusing on the beauty of the arrangements that so perfectly complement the deep vocals. "Take Me Through It" has more of a modern lite R'n'B flavor, with some great keyboards, crisp drums, and amazingly orchestrated vocal harmonies. Charity's cover of Collective Soul's "Shine" is also very nicely done, approaching an amazing song with a fresh outlook, but staying true to the original feeling of the song.

So, whether you dig great female vocalists, or good songs, or are looking for music that fits the "safe for my religion" category, you are certain to find a winner in Charity Von's debut record. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from this young lady, and I can safely predict that her future endeavors will be great.
