Former Thin Lizard Dawn bassist is still fired up and
pissed off
"Guess what?" asks New York City's irascible rocker
on his latest album. "Fuck you," he answers. Welcome
to the world of Mikki James.
James returns with his third release in a sub-genre that's
been described as garage-pop, although there's less grease and
grime here than in previous efforts. If anything, the "garage"
is in James' brash couldn't-give-a-shit attitude, expelling
an energy that at times is both comic and kinetic.
With a running time under 26 minutes, Guess What
barely
qualifies as an LP and ultimately feels like an exercise in futility.
But in less than half an hour, a charged-up James cranks out 10
quick-n-dirty numbers, complete with fiery roadside rockers and
fist-pumping anthems. Throughout these bruisers, James spits his
vitriol at the Man and every deceiver, depressive, and delusional
who gets in his way. And with sparse lyrics that range from oddly
obtuse to angst-ridden ("I nailed your fucking heart to the
wall of our disease"), James' sneers through the fish tank
and actually recalls the raw, free-swinging vibe of early Nirvana.
Suffice it to say that Mikki James is not someone you'd win an
argument with.
James is a loose goose content to constantly fly by the seat
of his pants. But with his splintery style, you get the feeling
that he'll forever be resigned as a sideshow in the underground
rock scene.
