A name like Kissing Cousins suggests childlike innocence.
And while this music is girly alright, it's hardly kid's stuff.
This Silver Lake group's self-titled, four song EP leans toward
the mysterious side. The track "Phone Call" is characterized
by big, echoing drums. On it they sing, "I don't care if you
go" applying Bjork-like vocals. "Sleep Little Angel,"
on the other hand, is - well - angelic. It includes pretty harmonies
and flute. Yep, you heard that right. Real flute (I think). This flute
(or an incredible synthetic simulation) returns on "White Room"
(no, not that Cream song), for a track that is jazzy in a Brazilian
kind of way.
Silver Lake is a Los Angeles region east of Hollywood, populated
by hipsters, hucksters, actors, and losers. Finding Kissing Cousins
there is like discovering a priceless jewel somebody mistakenly
dropped and lost in the gutter. You just want to pick it up, clean
it off, and let it shine. With this tiny new EP, Kissing Cousins
prove to have plenty of natural shine in 'em.
