People in Plains? I only know of one person in Plains, GA, and that's
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States. What?
You say the band's name is actually People in Planes? Sorry.
My mistake.
All bad jokes aside, People in Planes is a new band that manages
to sound slightly derivative and original at the same time. Don't
ask me how they pull this off; they just do. I hear a lot of Muse,
especially with Gareth Jones' vocals. Muse sounds a lot like
Radiohead, so thus that familiar band is also an obvious influence.
One tune called "If You Talk Too Much (My Head Will Explode)"
is, perhaps, the Radiohead-ist track of them all. It begins with a
lone female vocal then builds up momentum with stridently strummed
acoustic guitars.
The band's biography states that Jones and guitarist Peter Roberts
were prompted to start their own band after listening to Supergrass'
"I Should Coco" nonstop. But this isn't the simplistic teenage
party music found on early Supergrass recordings. Instead, People
in Planes are as serious - if not more so - than motherf*%#ing snakes
on a motherf*%#ing plane, to paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson's
famous summer thriller quote.
People in Planes create promising music for as far as the eye can
see.
