The first thing that comes to mind listening to LVL IV
is "Phil Tayler sounds an awful lot like Kurt Cobain."
This comparison was actually enough to entice me to buy the premier
album by Future Leaders Of The World. With a producer like
Garth Richardson it simply has to be a great album right?
Wrong.
There are parts of LVL IV that I simply love, but the
majority of the CD is redundant and incohesive. I couldn't help
but giggle a little when I listened to "For Sale" because
the comparison to "I'm A Fake" by The Used is
inescapable. I challenge you, loyal HM readers, to listen to the
songs back to back and see what you think.
The album isn't without its good points. Politically charged
lyrics and songs like "Let Me Out", "Unite",
"Sued", and "House of Chains" make me feel
confident in saying that there are glimmers of talent beneath
the mediocrity on LVL IV. This is a band that's still settling
into their own sound, and what the CD lacks in substance the band
makes up for with potential. We all forgave Incubus for
Fungus Amungus, so who knows, maybe we'll be able to forgive
the Future Leaders of The World for LVL IV.
