What do Panic! At The Disco, Hit The Lights and
So They Say have in common? One man: Matt Squire.
It was this name that prompted me to put the new band Boys
Like Girls in my CD player. Matt has produced over 20 albums
with a wide variety of artists. One of his most recent projects
is the self-titled release Boys Like Girls that just came
out in August. With this new album he has kept up his amazing
work and given us another sound to get addicted to. These guys
put out an excellent set of 12 songs for their debut on the music
scene. They've got almost an emo-pop sound, perfect for fans of
artists like: All-American Rejects, Plain White T's,
and The Academy Is
One thing that stuck out to me about this new group was their
inability to choose song titles. Want an example? Sure, "Up
Against The Wall" - believe it or not an 'N Sync song;
"Holiday" - The Get Up Kids' song and a rather
famous one; and you take one word out of: "On Top Of The
World"- you'll have not only a All-American Rejects song,
but a Brandy song as well. Naming a song can be tough and
there can be some expected overlap with previous songs, but when
there are recognizably multiple duplicates on one album, maybe
more time should've been spent naming songs.
Song titles aside, this album is a good one. They're currently
touring with artists like: Lostprophets, Spitalfield,
Punch Line and The Early November. They've got more
than enough variety not only in their headliners, but their CD
as well, which prompted me to get away from my CD player and over
to their concert. If you enjoyed any of Matt's prior projects,
you won't be disappointed with this one.
