San Francisco's Scissors For Lefty has been receiving
rave reviews for their self-titled EP from people in their hometown
of the Bay area. Oddly, it is a UK record label that has released
their disc - what is so attractive to the British about Scissors
For Lefty's Bryan Garza - vocals and guitar, Robby Garza
- bass and guitar, Peter Krimmel - keyboard and guitar,
and James Krimmel - drums and bass? And yes, that is two
different sets of brothers.
The quartet has a semblance to the UK's The Zutons in
their jumping grooves, a likeness to UK's The Boy Least Likely
To in their use of childlike sounds like kazoo's and whistle
pipes, and vocal registers along Britpop junctions comparable
to Razorlight. The band considers their party tunes to
be "pillow talk," documenting stories from their own
lives about searching for love, what went wrong with that love,
and making fun of what is wrong with them. They are a band who
don't see themselves as having all the answers to life and they
have a chuckle over their own flaws. They make energetic tracks
that are melodically queued and goosed by spontaneous vocal motions
similar to Razorlight's Johnny Borrell giving the songs
character like in the opening number "Lay Down Your Weapons."
Scissors For Lefty put a lot of their character in their songs
which may explain why people in their hometown really took a liking
to them. Their track "Mama Your Boys Will Find A Home' has
fun vocals with hop in the rhythmic patterns and bounce in the
guitar and keyboard hoops. They see music as a means of having
fun and their track "Ghetto Ways" keeps the movements
jumping and active without going into overdrive. The interaction
is animated without becoming congested or chaotic. They make pop/rock
that is enjoyable for themselves and others. Their final track
"Inevitable Thieves" mellows down the momentum a bit
but still keeps in the fun range.
Scissors For Lefty have toured with Grandaddy, The
Fiery Furnaces, The Arctic Monkeys, and Pedro The
Lion, to name just a few. They released their debut album
Bruno in 2005 and performed at SXSW in the Spring of 2006.
They are presently on a club tour through the States and will
be hitting the UK soon, afterall, it was the UK who actually invested
their bankrolls on them.
